Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
