Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
