The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
